Sheriff Mears, a native of the Dozier Community, graduated high school in 1980. Following his graduation, he embarked on a remarkable 24-year career with the United States Navy. Rising to the rank of Chief Petty Officer, Sheriff Mears earned prestigious accolades, including the Surface Warfare Cutlass, Aviation Warfare Insignia, and Seabee Combat Warfare Insignia. His military journey included significant contributions in conflicts such as the Gulf War, Russia, and Bosnia, earning him awards like the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation (5), and Navy Achievement Medal (6).
Upon retiring from the Navy, Sheriff Mears returned home to Dozier and transitioned into a new chapter of service. In 2006, he commenced his law enforcement career after successfully completing the Police Academy. His dedication took him through roles in the Opp Police Department, Florala Police Department, Brantley Police Department, and Luverne Police Department. Notably, he served as the Chief of Police in Dozier, showcasing his leadership acumen.
In November 2018, Sheriff Mears was elected as the Sheriff of Crenshaw County, officially assuming office in January 2019. His commitment to justice, safety, and community well-being led to his re-election for a second term in 2022. As Sheriff, he continues to bring a wealth of experience, integrity, and a profound dedication to the people he serves.
